We are all in this together – it is not easy for anyone to escape contact with EDCs, these ‘everywhere everyday’ chemicals.
So, together we need to help turn the tide on the production and use of EDCs, to demand that more is done to protect us from them; more is done to find non-toxic alternatives; more is done to inform people about what they can do themselves to minimize the negative impact of EDCs.
It looks like an impossible task – but it’s not!
We know it is possible to change government priorities, to change social norms, to change individual behaviours - it can be done; it has been done. Think about how attitudes and behaviours have changed over the past 50 years to seat belts, tobacco use, access to clean drinking water, eating organic food and adopting more healthy diets, the role of women in society … of course more needs to be done, but change is possible!
In January 1971 the Royal College of Physicians in England established ASH (Action on Smoking and Health). Through slow, steady, and persistent effort, working with a range of organizations, ASH made the world aware of the dangers of smoking tobacco, it mobilized governments to better control the tobacco industry, it changed how cigarettes were allowed to be advertised and sold, what is acceptable, whether people chose not to smoke … and saved millions of lives and many millions of days of ill health.
Chemical Alert Africa (CAA) wants to undertake a similar journey and reverse the tide of EDCs being used in Africa. Unfortunately, time, resources and vested-interests are not on our side. We need to work purposefully, strategically and urgently, with commitment and focus.
We can’t do this alone; we need to work together, and we need your support. If we are going to succeed, CAA must support rigorous functional research to better understand what is going on, expand laboratory capacity to monitor EDCs, engage governments in developing legislation, encourage the chemical industry to find alternatives to EDCs, work with vulnerable communities to help them minimise the harm of these chemicals … MANY things!
